In Mr. Oliver's second grade class, he had his students use a spreadsheet to analyze the amount of seeds in relation to a pumpkin and how many seeds are in a pumpkin in comparison to the size of the pumpkin. I think this is a fun activity for kids and puts an educational spin on carving pumpkins for Halloween.
I think a good way I could modify this activity for my classroom would be to use a smaller fruit or vegetable. I could use a watermelon. This way, the students wouldn't get overwhelmed by the size of the object, but they still get to get their hands messy and do a hands-on activity that's fun. I would do the activity in August or May to compensate for the weather changes. I think this would be a really fun activity for the kids, and we could eat watermelon when we're done! The students can still compare the size of watermelon with the number of seeds inside.
